Sirkis/Bialas IQ - Spring Tour 2016, Gig No.5 at the Olivier`s, London, UK

Each tour is a bundle of polarizing experiences. I`m feeling richer each time I learn and discover something new about myself and the surrounding universe …

I took some indu-photos from the car on the way to the venue in London

CONCRETE & IRON MEET SKIES:

Last night we play in London, at the Olivier`s.

This is a great venue, small and cosy and last year our gig in this place was extremely positive. We had a lively and enthusiastic audience, the place was completely packed and everybody had fun that eventing. This time it was slightly different…
Unfortunately, in places like that there`s no constant audience that comes to concerts in order to listen to the music. There are mostly tourists that come there to happily socialize by a loud background music and a drink or five ;-)…
We had no “over - the - top - expectations” toward the audience but found it very difficult to play softer tunes as some of the audience was extremely loud…
There were also people that came specially to listen to us and some other attentive members of the audience that were challenged by the high level of noise as well. One of them even went to the “loud talkers” and asked to lower their voices, because it is difficult for the music to happen in this room.
At the end of the gig, this created an arguiment between the “loud - talkers” and “listeners”. No point to get deeper into the details. BUT! :

The most important thing we`ve learned from this experience is that in those moments of being “tested by the universe” :-), in those times of struggling and being challenged by the circumstances our band always passes with an A+. I truly feel that it is a real blessing. We played as we would do in Carnegie Hall, :-)))), hiding in the bubble of our musicianship and being thankful for those passionate listeners in the crowd that appreciated our devotion and love to the music. We managed to focus on our job and deliver our best without being influenced by the negativity. A hell of the fun it was!

Here some pics from the soundcheck...

After the gig, during the verbal battle between the “listeners” and “loud talkers” we silently packed our gear, ate the delicious cake, brought for us by our favorite music fans : Izabela and Wojtek Stumpf, MUCH LOVE TO YOU BOTH! :-) - and left the place uplifted and positive.

On the way back home, me and Asaf were chatting about Frank Zappa`s approach in leading his band and how well we can comprehend it.

Investing all the money he has earned in the better gear, deeper rehearsing, better recording studios, accommodations and travel circumstances for everyone. Just to be able to give the best to both - the audience and his band fellows. I guess that when you know what it means to have a band playing your own music - you learn how to appreciate and you`re ready to become a poor man with the “well-fed” soul rather than the opposite :-)))

I`m feeling thankful…Thankful to play with such gifted musicians and positive human beings. Feeling thankful that our new touring van is a great “working horse” and that tomorrow, after this sunny Sunday we all are going to be on the road again, looking forward to spread the good spirit and give all playing at the South - West Coast of UK!

Thanks to everybody that follows this blog and accompanies us on our trip!
Thanks to Asaf, Kevin and Frank for being THEMSELVES :-)
Thanks to this nice couple of “listeners” that fought this verbal battle in the name of all the artists giving their best.
Thanks to Izabella and Wojtek for their musical spirits and feeding us with cakes and appreciation :-)

Much love, and see you in Appledore!

Sylwia

P.S. Some folks do travel light! ;-)

Sirkis/Bialas IQ - Spring Tour 2016, Gig No.4 at the Red Lion, Birmingham, UK

DEAR PEEPS,

Last night we played at the wholehearted and warm venue in Birmingham. It is always a big pleasure to come back to this place - full of charm, healthy humour and filled with music lovers.

Many thanks to the one and only Phil Rose for having us again and for keeping the Jazz spirit up in Birmingham.

Also 1000 thanks to Brian Homer for the great Fotos!

And here they are : FOTOS - SIRKIS/BIALAS IQ at THE RED LION

AND HERE COME HAPPY & "UNSERIOUS" COLORS FROM THE ROAD ;-):

Much love and see you at the Oliver`s in London tonight!

TIM Garland`s "ONE" played live in Cardiff! Impressions from the gig.

This time I`m having a had a real pleasure to listen live to this amazing Quartet:

Tim Garland, Jason Rebello, Ant Law and Asaf Sirkis rocking the Art Centre in Cardiff! What a treat.

This time my job was not only to listen but also to look carefully ;-)

Here some impressions:

The show was great, what a burning band of stars! I even managed to experience Jason`s amasing TOE-PLAYING debut after his keabord stand broke down on stage. A graceful toe technique - indeed ;-D!

See you tomorrow at the Red Lion in Birmingham!

Sirkis/Bialas IQ - Spring Tour 2016, Gig No.4 at the Goodfellowship Inn, Hull, UK

DEAR PEEPS,

Our next tour - station was in Hull. After the “Breathing Rhythms” workshop that Asaf and me have given at the University of Hull, we played a gig at the Goodfellowship Inn. The venue is placed in the middle of a lush garden.

They serve some simple and yummie food in the restaurant which can be obviously pretty dangerous ;-) - Kevin ate half of a pig and could hardly move his fingers after - hahah… Frank does not have such problems as a proper dose of his speeded - up - tai chi - exercises before each gig burns the needed amount of the calories to set free his movements while playing.

Me and Asaf ended up in our beloved touring car stuffing ourselves with the delish fruity chia-pudding :-))))). That made us survive with class ;-)!

The audience at the Goodfellowship Inn wasn`t huge but very enthusiastic, what made the gig even more enjoyable…Here some silence before the storm:

After the gig we tried to find the hotel in the middle of nowhere, passing some fields full of tiny rabbits jumping around in the moonlight.
The guys had to listen to my screams : “bunny alarm!"

In the morning we had a proper “builders breakfast”  in a cosy B&B, listening to Janis Joplin`s “Piece of My Heart” and watching the funny & bizzare pictures hanging on the walls...

That was a nice and funny one. Now time to bring Frank and Kevin to the train station and travel to Asaf`s gig with Tim Garland`s New Lighthouse in…CARDIFF - ups, some miles to go.

Looking forward to listen to this Quartet playing material from their new album :ONE! Arrrr ;-)

Take care and stay tuned for the new adventures!

Sirkis/Bialas IQ - Spring Tour 2016, Gig No.3 at the BYOC, London, UK

Dear Peeps,
A few days of touring and it feels like we`re on the road since a long time.
Probably the daily amount ofdriving and all that kilometers we made put every experience in different frames.
On the 10th of May we played in a venue in London called BYOC:

It was the first time that this venue hosted a live band. The gig has been organized by Patrick, the former owner of AJANI.
Was so nice to meet him again. Patrick is a sweet person and a real music lover. We`re waiting for your own new Venue to be opened, Patrick! xxx

As the gig happened as a spontaneous part of the tour - we had a huge luck and pleasure to play with our “good old” friend :-) and a great musician Yaron Stavi on the electric bass. It was so funny to realize that Yaron, Asaf and Frank that normally were used to play together as a part of Gilad Atzmon`s Ensembles and inspite the fact that they know each other since years, they haven`t really play all together before in the other context. That was fun! :-).

The evening got really long and after the set with our touring material we ended up playing some standards. Funny thing - it does feel a bit awkward to touch the american songbook after such an intense time spent with playing originals ;-)…Anyway, whatever you play with those guys is a feast for the ears and an exercise for the hips :-)))!

When the band burns and is hyper-lively it is a hard task to take some pictures - I guess our dear friend, Corinna - had to struggle trying to “nail” the bouncing Yaron onto a proper photography! hahah, much much love to you both xxx !

Pics from the gig, taken by Corinna Hentschel, thank you, dear :-)! :

LOVE IS IN THE AIR - Yaron & Corinna:

On way home...

Thank you guys, for a great time! Next station : HULL!

Sirkis/Bialas IQ - Spring Tour 2016, Gig No.2 in Hen & Chicken, Bristol, UK

Back on the road with Kevin Glasgow!

DEAR PEEPS,

We got here summer in May. Beautiful landscapes on way to Bristol and the first gig with Asaf`s new set of crotales.

Spending all that time in a car gives me loads of time to reflect things...

Touring with your own band, performing your own music means tapping into the most intense process of exploring your creativity, adjustability, dealing with struggles,  feeling joy, managing difficulties,  fighting tiredness, sometimes being "high" of euphoria, sometimes knocked out of frustration. It means feeling alive and getting to know your capabilities and limits and being in the middle of emotional vortex that carries you from one venue to another, from one audience to another...

You feel responsible for your music, for your band folks, for delivering the best of your expression, the best of yourself, for sharing your love to what you do and letting others into your sacred zone putting yourself out there...

Wayne Shorter said that musicians and artists of all kinds are the most vulnerable beings that stomp on earth. We are like children... He said that vulnerability is he birthplace of creativity and the most honest kind of expression. That we are lucky to experience moving the others and connect them and with them through what we create...

Each time we are stuck in the traffic, the PA system doesn`t work the way it should, the promoter is difficult, the acoustic of the venue or the gig fees suck, the lack of sleep takes it`s tall on our health and, and (...)– it is good to remember those words and feel grateful for this gift of doing what we love to do, sharing what we want to share and trying to make people feel more then they`re used to allow themselves in the reality of our times...

Starting to get a bit philosophic, I guess... This would be a perfect moment for Frank Harrison to bring me back to earth with one of his “grouding” jokes...Because „how long can you stay serious“... :-)

I truly love those guys... Kevin just played several gigs at Ronnie Scott`s with his amazing trio and is in his best „musically - shedding“ mode at the moment :-). Check them out!

Frank practiced Elmo`s Song with his little daughter in all 12 keys, which definitely brought his transcendental solos to an even more spaced out dimension and Asaf... Well, this most incredible soul of a man manages to make all this happen. He is the heart and spine of this band. The most passionate, inspiring and giving being I`ve ever met. Feeling lucky to be a part of this crew and ready for everything that this tour is going to bring!

Loading the batteries of my photo cam, preparing the equipment and trying to rest a bit today...

Tomorrow London with Yaron Stavi!

We`re all are looking forward to see Izabella and Wojtek tomorrow night - people like them make the life of a musician even more colorful :-)

Stay tuned!

Sylwia

P.S. Slawek Orwat - thank you for supporting our tour XXX!

Tour 2016: Sirkis / Bialas IQ at the Ropetackle Arts Centre, Shoreham-By-Sea (26.01.2016)

The Sirkis/Bialas International Quartet is a fresh new collaboration between Israeli UK-resident drummer/composer Asaf Sirkis, known for his work with the Lighthouse trio (ACT), Gilad Atzmon, Tim Garland, Larry Corryel, John Abercrombie & the Asaf Sirkis Trio, and Polish vocalist/composer extraordinaire Sylwia Bialas.

The quartet features London based, scottish bassist Kevin Glasgow, and the acclaimed Frank Harrison on piano and keyboards (UK).

With an emphasis on band interaction and sheer joy of playing, this band celebrates music from both collaborators, covering a wide range of influences such as contemporary classical music, Polish folk, South Indian & Middle Eastern musics as well as a wide range of dynamics – from the most delicate ballad all the way to high-energy electric virtuoso lines and everything in between. Expect soulful melodies, aerospheric sounds with strong grooves, a full colour electroacoustic jazz with an ethnic touch and some uncommonly used instruments and sound effects.

The quartet`s latest album „Come To Me“ was released 2014 at the London Jazz Festival and the band has been touring in the UK and Europe since.
